The Hunting Ground (Matthew and Owen)

  1. It is difficult to know how to respond in these situations. Sexual assault is a systemic and all too common issue plaguing contemporary society. The reality of sexual assault is that it is rarely falsely reported. Between 2 and 8% of claims are false, meaning between 92 and 98% of the time, women are shamed or ignored. As seen in the Hunting Ground, what contributes as a driving force in rape culture is miseducation and skepticism. Without guaranteed repercussions, accused hide behind the advantage of the benefit of the doubt. While we are not saying this is necessarily a terrible reality of itself, the rhetoric of the accused is crucial into how the community and accountability establishments perceive the claim of the victim. To increase empathy within a community for the victim, it is imperative that the accused either accept responsibility, or deny the allegations in a way that does not humiliate or discredit the accuser’s character. People are more likely to believe their friends, and if their friends are to propagate a narrative bashing the victim and their credibility, this will create a community in opposition to the victim. The response to allegations from the accused and administration has to be completely respectful to both parties. Title IX expansions are essential to hold administrators accountable for providing a thorough and unbiased investigation.
  2. End Rape On Campus (EROC) was founded by a collection of students and administrators from across the nation in 2013. Many of the founders are women who have experienced the traumas of rape or sexual assault themselves. Their mission, as stated on their website is to “end campus sexual violence through direct support for survivors and their communities; prevention through education; and policy reform at the campus, local, state, and federal levels.” (EROC Mission Statement) EROC is a non profit that gets  many of its funding through donations. Ultimately the media coverage is positive, as many of EROC’s members are contributors to media outlets. All rape awareness outlets should receive positive bipartisan media support.
