The first step to supporting survivors of sexual abuse is prevention through education. Women are often taught to put keys between their fingers and carry mace when they're walking alone at night. We are taught from a young age to be weary of predatory men, yet those men are never taught acceptable behavior towards women. This is why we were told that boys who bullied us actually liked us. We must also make sure that teaching prevention through education goes for all genders as men can also be survivors of sexual assault. The second step should be believing survivors. In The Hunting Ground, a commonality between all of the survivors' stories is the fact that the colleges were not inclined to believe their accusations. This not only perpetuates the already present rape culture in our society, but it also dissuades women from reporting sexual assault altogether. Our first instinct when acknowledging these reports should not be victim blaming or slut shaming, it should instead be support.
